Synthetic Bioluminescent Jellyfish
Chrysaora Industrialumina

This sculptural installation examines the relationships between organic and synthetic, nature and technology, etc. Here, one of nature’s most soft, fragile, aqueous creatures is rendered using solid, sharp, industrial materials (blown glass, neon, steel wire, plastic tubing). The result is a flock of ethereal monsters, both beautiful and frightening, neither synthetic nor organic.

The above "blue" image is from a solo exhibition entitled zooLOGIC (november 1998), which featured the jellyfish installation and a graphics program I authored that creates an artificial flock of butterflies. The "pink" ones are from a collaborative neon-art exhibit entitled "Let There Be Light," (spring 1999). Both events took place in San Diego, CA.
